Walk into any boxing shop and you will be sold half a catalogue. Walk into any boxing gym and you will see what people actually use. This is the honest version: what you need for your first six months, in the order you will need it.

1. Hand wraps — before anything else

Wraps protect the 27 small bones in each hand and cost less than a takeaway. Buy two pairs of 4.5m elasticated wraps so one can dry while the other works. Every session, no exceptions.

2. One good pair of gloves

Your first gloves should be a 14oz velcro all-rounder — heavy enough to protect your hands on the bag, standard enough to join light partner drills. Velcro, because you will be taking them on and off between rounds without help. This is exactly the brief the Velocity 3.0 Velcro was built for; it is the workhorse of our range. Avoid the temptation to buy fight gloves early — 10oz gloves are for competition, and your hands are not ready.

3. When sparring starts: 16oz gloves, a gumshield, and a headguard

Your coach will tell you when. When they do: most UK gyms require 16oz gloves for sparring — a lace-up like the Velocity 3.0 Lace-Up gives you the wrist support hard rounds demand. A boil-and-bite gumshield is fine to start. A proper sparring headguard like the Osiris 2.0 becomes worth it the week you start sparring regularly — full-grain leather, lace fit, and cheek coverage that does not block your vision.

4. What you can skip for now

  • Boxing boots — trainers are fine until you compete.
  • Your own bag — you are joining a gym; use theirs.
  • Speed and agility gadgets — footwork drills are free.

What it costs

Wraps plus a quality 14oz glove lands around the £100 mark, and that kit carries you comfortably through six months of training. When sparring starts, budget for the 16oz gloves and headguard. Buy quality once rather than replacing budget gear twice — full-grain leather gloves outlast cheap PU by years.
