Titan Boxing – Our Equipment, Our Journey – An Honest Account
In the beginning the way we saw the world of boxing equipment at Titan was one of 2 paths, stack ’em high and sell ’em low or really focus our efforts and create boxing equipment that would perform so well that in the end even we were surprised at what we had accomplished. Admittedly I don’t think I realised the complexity involved in creating something as outstanding as I came to desire. I can’t even remember how many pairs of samples we have been through, how many times we changed things, improved it and changed it again.
Titan Boxing Equipment has been under continuous development for the past year, sometimes it felt like we weren’t getting anywhere and sometimes I felt too impatient with the process that I wasn’t sure I was going to have the patience to get this to where it needed to be. We were getting so close but obstacles would crop up, one that springs to mind is when I got a letter from the lawyer of the Tennessee Titans NFL team suggesting we were infringing on their trade marking. Back to square one I thought. After some negotiation and promising I wouldn’t rip them off we got it sorted.
Back to product development, again. We were getting there now, the feel of the items was improving and I was feeling more positive. Finally the models that were eventually decided on came through, WOW… I was impressed (I still am). When given the option of materials it was always the best we could source from a very early stage but when it comes to boxing gloves and equipment it is not just about high quality leather and padding.
When creating a product that is going to go through such relentless strain; build quality, care and attention to the construction are all paramount. When a boxer or fighter of any kind is going to put their trust in protective equipment, that company or glove maker has a duty of care. The shape of the glove, the hand compartment, the support are all so important.
I guess the question is, how did I know when I got to where I wanted this to be?
I don’t think I have worn boxing gloves that made my hands feel like they did when I put them into the final Velocity glove model. It seemed to make the perfect fist and when I started using them on the bags I knew for sure I was there. They connected so well and just seemed to get better and better with every session, so I wore them sparring and… they were great. We had done it!
Even to this day, when I wrap my hands I am excited to put on my Titan Boxing Gloves or if I am sparring I can’t wait to don my Shot Stopper Headgear, it’s safe to say that we are proud of what we have achieved. I want people to experience the same feelings I get about boxing gloves, head guards whatever it is. I love it.
That’s why I did it.
